PRIVATE RESIDENCE
Te Anau, New Zealand

Program: 4 bedroom home, with dramatic views

Solution: Inspired by the New Zealand tradition of steeply pitched roofs and sheltering wrap around porches, this modest building rises from a stark plain that gradually slopes down to the shores of Lake Te Anau. In plan, the 2 story main living space combines with an angled bedroom wing to create a welcoming and protective arrival side, reminiscent of an informal cluster of smaller structures.  On the lake side, the spatial heirarchy of the house is more strongly expressed, as the double height living areas open out to the stunning views of Lake Te Anau and the mountains of Fiordland National Park beyond.
